How I organize my muslin mock-ups/ Tutorial

Ever since I started college, I have a growing collection of muslin Mock-ups. I like to keep everything organized and together when I sew. Since I am a grab and go type girl, this works perfect for me. I have all the pattern pieces with the notes I need to sew it on the fashion fabric right at my hands.

Things you will need:

-muslin mock up

-sheet protectors

-hangers

-sewing pattern

 -index cards

Step 1: Put the sewing pattern in a sheet protector.

Step 2:  Put on one side the index card the patten number and on the other side I put the pattern alterations.

Step 3: Last I put the index card in the sheet protector so the pattern number is showing. You can put the sheet protector on the hanger through one of the holes or pin it to the garment and hang it up.

This month I entered a giveaway on sew well blog for her one year blog anniversary and was ecstatic when I found out I  won. I won a beautiful OOP McCall pattern and two yards of black and white lightweight wool.

Sewing 30 minutes a day- 2012 goal

My only new years resolution is to think less and sew more. I have spent to much time on the computer looking at patterns and dreaming of them being made and ready to wear in my closet. So I have been setting a goal to sew thirty minutes and if I missed a day an hour the next, so far it has been working well. I just got done sewing my first pants muslin. It did not go so well, but I made my self finish it any ways so I can learn from my mistakes. I really think every 30 minutes is bettering my sewing skills.

 I have been promising my sister that I will be sewing this pattern for the longest. So since I am on break I thought it would be a great beginners project for me to start. I did make the whole garment as if it was made in the fashion fabric. I am very pleased how the muslin came out.

I made view B in a size 16 1/2 . The only change I made in the pattern was to take out the exposed zipper in the front, and inserted an invisible zipper to the side. Which  required me to sew the lining in last instead of first like the pattern instructed. The pattern instructions were simple but I am unsure if I will be making it in the fashion fabric because my sister ended up hating the bubble butt the pattern gave her . I thought it would make cute pj's, but she disagreed. Even though she was not a fan of this pattern, I am still glad I made it because I got to practice a lot of the basics they taught me in school. Plus I learned a new tip when sewing this. I used to always take forever to turn spaghetti straps, I mean I would pinch the fabric out of the tube till the whole tube is turned. I found that I can use a safety pin to do it. I don't know why it took me so long to find this out, but I am glad I know now. 

I purchased one of my must haves!

  I just want to give a special thanks to Bonnie for helping me find this vintage pattern. In August I had made a post about vintage pattern I would die for . This pattern was on the top of the list because I have been searching for this pattern for this longest. I mean I have checked Google,Etsy,  and Ebay and had no luck. I did not find this pattern till I seen Bonnie left a comment with the site selling it for around five dollars. I still can not believe I own this pattern. I can not wait to make this dress, I am thinking about making the gorgeous dress in a red satin.

College LBD is done!

My final for my fashion100 class was to make a little black dress. I had used black poly poplin I got from Vogue for three dollars. This was defiantly not an easy project since I had to sew in in two weeks. The pattern is a simple block pattern my teacher designed, with bust darts and side contour darts. I was amazed because she drafted so many designs from the same pattern. I kept mine as simple as possible because the time we had to make it.

The only embellishment I added to the dress was an iron on applique.

Huge update/ haul

  I have been so busy lately, In two week I have been sewing a muslin blouse for school. This was defiantly a project for me because I had so many firsts. I learned how to do a Hong-Kong seam finish, put in a 6-step buttonhole and sew a collar in. I learned things I have not tried before.I wish I had took pictures before I turned it in, but my camera was down.  The good news is I finally got the grade for my skirt this week and I scored a high B.  In class we are currently working on making a little black dress. I am thrilled because this is our first project we are making out of fashion fabric. I will be updating you guys through the process.

Now for the haul:
 I had shopped at Joann's, Walmart and Vogue this week looking for the greatest deals on fabric and notions, and this is what I found.

This fabric is so beautiful. I fell in love with it the moment I seen it. I really want to make a blazer or Burda 7460.

price- $4.99 a yard

I purchased 2.5 yards of this black poplin for the little black dress I am making at school.

Price- $2.99 a yard

This was some navy blue denim I found in the remnants section at Vogue.

1.5 yards for $4.50

 I plan on making a cute summer blouse with this fabric.

I purchased 2 yards for $1.30 a yard.

This is a nude colored cotton I bought from Walmart for $2.00 a yard.

The nude colored lining was on sale for a dollar a yard so I picked up 4 yards.

Last week I purchased three patterns when they were on sale. This was one of my most exciting purchases because I found an OOP pattern.

Homework Craziness!

 I am so sorry for my blog lacking. All the homework I have been getting lately is driving me crazy! I never thought going to college was going to be so stressful and hard. I have a day to learn a new sewing technique, then a week to make the sample using the technique.

I had to have all these samples finished in a week.
 The hard part was all the sewing had to be at school.

Right now we are working on a skirt, this is the first skirt I ever made successfully. I could not be more proud of myself, all my seams are finished, I learned how to put in my first lapped zipper, and attach a waistband. Although I learned how to master some techniques, I need to practice on others, like my top stitching.

I know, I still have to iron the wrinkles out!
